Four attempted murders in Alex in a week

Alex Police arrested two suspects in connection with two separate cases of attempted murder and are investigating two other similar crimes committed in a week.

Police spokesperson Captain Allie Kodisang said a man was arrested in connection with the attempted murder which occurred on 4th Avenue at 6pm on 13 March. When the investigating officer got to the crime scene, the victim, who was identified as David Nyirenda, had already been taken to the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital by ambulance for treatment.

The next day at about 11.30pm unknown suspects shot at the home of a victim. The victim had been drinking beer with a friend next to his shack on 3rd Avenue when he decided to go in and sleep. After closing the door, shots were fired into the shack. The victim hid behind a sofa. When the shooting stopped, the victim checked and found four bullet holes in the shack and three more in a Toyota Avanza that was parked nearby. No one was in the vehicle.

On 15 March, another suspect who is allegedly part of a gang of three, was arrested for an attempted murder which occurred at 2 am at a 20th Avenue home. The police are still searching for his accomplices. A female and two younger siblings were awakened by screams in their brother’s room. They opened the door and quickly closed it again when they saw three men, including one who had a gun, in their brother’s room. As they blocked the door, a shot went off and a bullet hit one of the siblings in the hand. The suspects took two TV sets and two cellphones and fled. The injured child was treated at a clinic and the suspect was arrested later.

Another attempted murder occurred on 3rd Avenue at 5.30pm on 18 March. The suspect approached the victim and demanded an iron that he was fixing and also a R20 note that he owed suspect. When the victim said the iron would be ready in a couple of days and that he would also return the money days later, the suspect was infuriated. He insulted the man and left after warning that he would return, which he did minutes later. The suspect continued to insult the victim who was with some friends. He then drew a gun and shot the man before fleeing. The victim was treated for wounds in the thigh and hand.
