The Alexandra police saved the life of a suspect who was about to be necklaced by a mob with a burning tyre in 15th Avenue.
This was after a local house was invaded by two young men armed with knives who found two young girls aged 14 and 15 and attempted to rape them on Friday noon 28 September. According to Captain Stephen Malatjie of Alexandra Police Station, the suspects stabbed the girls after their failed attempt to rape them leaving them critically injured and took away a television set and two cell phones.
“The girls suffered critical injuries and were taken to hospital in their father’s car. A few minutes later the police were alerted about a mob that was about to burn one of the suspects alive in 15th Avenue. On their arrival the police found a young man being beaten up by the community and rescued him,” Said Malatjie.
One of the girls confirmed to the police after her discharge from the local hospital that the suspect who escaped mob justice was one of the perpetrators. The suspect was under police guard in hospital and the second suspect was still at large after he had jumped out of his parent’s car on the way to the police station.
The police have urged community members not to take the law into their hands. In the past few months, a number of people have been killed through tyre necklacing mob justice in Alexandra.
