Two men from Alex were on 26 July, sentenced in Alexandra Magistrates’ Court to 15 years’ imprisonment for aggravated robbery.
The charge, initially of possession of suspected stolen goods, was changed after the teenage victim identified the accused, Kgomotso Masekwaneng (30) and Bafana Khumalo (32) at the Sandton Police Station when they were being processed for detention.
He was there to report the incident which occurred at about 5.30pm on 5 July in Sandton. The two found the victim alone after breaking into the home. They threatened him at gunpoint and took two cell phones, two power bank chargers, and a Nike glove. Police patrolling in Wendywood at 8.20pm stopped the two walking down the road and searched them. They found a toy gun on one of them and the phones, chargers and glove on the accomplice. They were arrested and taken to the station when they failed to provide the pin number for any of the phones or prove ownership of the other items.
Magistrate Renier Boshoff assisted by state prosecutor Lufuno Maphiri converted the charge to aggravated robbery and possession and use of the toy gun during the robbery. The items were returned to the victim.
