A multitude of community members converged on Alexandra Heritage Centre to celebrate late former president Nelson Mandela’s centenary birthday on Wednesday 18 July.
The non-profit organisation Gift of the Givers, in partnership with local business people, baked a giant, six-metre birthday cake for the community to enjoy. This was to celebrate Nelson Mandela’s centenary birthday and to celebrate the work he did for the country and the world.

According to Emily Thomas of Gift of the Givers, a non-profit organisation, the giant cake was baked by Thusong Cake Masters who they worked with in preparation for this year’s celebration of Madiba.
“We came to Alexandra as Gift of the Givers to celebrate the life of Nelson Mandela, the legend of our lifetime. We collaborated with two local businessmen – Doctor Mokoena and Gift Maruma of Thusong Cake Masters – who requested to work with us on this initiative,” she said
“We as Gift of the Givers donated all the ingredients, and they baked the cake.”
Mokoena thanked Gift of the Givers for heeding their call to bake the biggest cake, ever, for Madiba’s birthday.
After the celebration, community members received some food parcels from Gift of the Givers to share with their families at home.
