Four alleged robbers in Midrand were remanded in custody by Alexandra Magistrates’ Court pending further investigation.
Magistrate Renier Boshoff, assisted by state prosecutor Lufuno Maphiri, remanded the gang from Diepsloot in custody for robbery with aggravating circumstances which occurred about midday on 2 May in Midrand.
The gang which had earlier robbed a man were chased, apprehended and beaten by the community for a separate unspecified reason before being handed over to the police. The perpetrators had followed and stopped the victim who was walking home through the veld from work and demanded his cellphone and a R10 note he had on him. In fear, he gave them the items and sought help from some security guards.
The guards and the victim then saw the gang fleeing from a group of people who apprehended them. The police were called to the scene and arrested them. One of the men was badly injured and had to be hospitalised under police guard at Tembisa Hospital. He appeared in court walking on crutches.
It was not specified if the victim’s items were recovered.
