TAKE NOTE: Thundershowers expected on Tuesday evening

While the South African Weather Service has issued a warning of severe thundershowers today, hot temperatures are also expected to continue until this afternoon.

The Automobile Association of South Africa (AA) has advised motorists not to leave children and pets alone in their cars.

“As temperatures, in specifically the northern provinces soar again today [Tuesday], we warn all motorists to not leave children or pets in vehicles, even for short periods of time,” the association said.

This was because temperatures in cars can climb very rapidly and even with a slightly opened window, the inside temperature will exceed outside temperatures.

“Children and pets left in cars are vulnerable and can become dehydrated quickly.”

Instead of running errands with children and pets, motorists are advised to rather leave them at home because consequences of leaving children and pets in hot, badly ventilated cars were extremely dangerous and should be avoided.

“In addition, these hot summer days may be followed by heavy downpours and, in some cases, may even lead to floods. For this reason, all road users must ensure they drive, walk or cycle safely across bridges and main roads.”

Forecaster, Wayne Venter said they were expecting 80 per cent of heavy rainfall in the evening, with hail and strong winds also anticipated.

He advised citizens who would be outside to seek shelter but should avoid doing so under trees, electric lines or on top of hills.

“We are also looking at about 38 degrees Celsius with hot north easterly winds in the afternoon,” Venter said.

He added that people should drink lots of fluids and keep cool.

The AA said car tyres should be checked to ensure they were in good condition because worn tyres may lead to aquaplaning in wet weather.

“Any tyres which are balding, including spare tyres, should be replaced immediately to avoid potential risks.”
