ANC tables second motion of no confidence in Mashaba and Da Gama

After its first application failed, the African Nation Congress (ANC) Johannesburg caucus has once again tabled motions of no confidence against the Speaker of Council, Vasco Da Gama, and Executive Mayor, Herman Mashaba.

On 13 September this year, Funzela Ngobeni, the leader of council’s executive business and MMC for Development Planning, said his committee had found the ANC’s first motion of no confidence against Mashaba and the speaker inadmissible.

“The last motions tabled by the ANC were deemed inadmissible by the City’s Programming Committee as the call for a secret ballot was in direct conflict with the Standing Rules of Council,” Mashaba added.

The ANC then approached the High Court to intervene, but the matter was struck off the roll on the basis that it was not urgent.

Mashaba said the ANC’s motion lacked substance and called it nothing more than a smokescreen by the party to regain the City. “It is unfortunate that the ANC will use council’s time and taxpayers’ money in their mission to further enriching themselves,” he said.

The motion is expected to appear before council at the end of the month.
