A guard at a Hyde Park residence was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment on 22 June for stealing from his employers.
Andrew Low (33) of Meyersdale admitted before Magistrate Renier Boshoff in the Alex Magistrates Court that he stole jewellery and cash – including American dollars – all worth about R2 million. The items and cash went missing from the home between October 2015 and March 2016.
Low claimed that he gambled away the money at a casino. Only a ring, worth about R250 000, was recovered after a paper trail of the sale linked him to the crime. At first Low claimed that he found the ring in the driveway at the home.
One of the exhibits during the trial was an advert for the sale of the ring in a Cape Town publication.
Low, at first, denied involvement in the theft until confronted with evidence when he admitted to tampering with a safe in which the stolen items had been stored.
Do you think security companies are doing enough background checks on their personnel?
