Bidvest Wits’ Shungu Dutiro proved his worth at the Engen Knockout Challenge at Marks Park when he bagged three awards to stake a claim as one of the most promising young stars in the junior ranks. The 16-year-old Dutiro, a Grade 10 pupil at St Stithians College in Randburg, was awarded the Best Striker of the Tournament, Top Goal Scorer of the Tournament, and Best Player of the Tournament.

Dutiro has been part of the Bidvest Wits academy for the past three years, and his mother, Gloria, was full of praise for her son, saying he has improved immensely over the years.

“I feel extremely proud of Shungu as he has worked very hard to get where he is,” she said.

“He started enjoying soccer when he was six years old and through the years he has grown in leaps and bounds.

“Today is just a culmination of a lot of things, including Shungu overcoming an injury at the beginning of the year, which has made me extremely proud of what he has achieved today.”

Dutiro was equally delighted by his performance throughout the tournament and has set himself definitive goals.

“In the next three to five years I would like to be breaking into professional football, but for now I am just looking to improve my game and go to the U19s,” he said
